My name Is Ron Hawkins I have been living in South Africa since 1976 unfortunately it is time to leave. We are in the process of selling up here after which we are going to return to the U.K. Before coming to S.A. I had a 24 foot cabin cruiser for several years but have always wanted to sale.

We have pushed around a lot of ideas over returning to the U.K. and have decided if it's allowed, to live permanently on a boat. We have done a lot of research about various craft and have decided a catamaran suits the bill. I like the Prout Snowgoose and think this boat would be suitable for our purpose's.

Unfortunately the exchange rate between the two countries are not very favourable for us but we should have between 100 to 150 thousand pounds on arrival in the U.K. and hope to be there within the next 3 months.

I would very much appreciate advice on purchase of such a boat, availablibility of permanent moorings and approx cost and possible contact with any members with the Prout Owners Association who might have undertaken the same ideas as us.

I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Best regards.

Ron Hawkins

I can offer this information./.....

I bought my 1998 Prout 38 in 2006 and did a complete refit all new navigation rebuilt engines (word to the wise, repower with Yanmars I didn't and it was a mistake)...subbing out all the work myself I still dropped around a 100,000 US without blinking an eye...

If I were you I'd consider buying one in the US, getting the work done over here then sailing or having the boat delivered over there, you'd probably save a bundle....

J.

Also consider the Beta engine when/if repowering. Fitted a 20hp 3 cylinder Beta into our Quest 31, which was smaller, ligher and much more powerful than the old 2 cylinder Yanmar. It runs very sweetly, I've been very pleased, it's built around a Kabota engine and is very reasonably and competitively priced. Having said that, my mate repower with a Yanmar and he's very happy with that too - so, you pays your money and takes your choice! It has to be a toss -up between those two only - whichever is more convenient for you!

We too have fitted a Beta engine (25HP) to our Quest. Runs as sweet as you'd ever want. I had two Yanmars in a previous Catalac - they proved reliable too.

I'd opted for the Beta because the service I got when looking was far better from Beta than Yanmar's distributor.

As Chris says, there's only two to choose from.

Good luck.
